Dr. Emily Smokovich has been praised as a “brilliant” and “mesmerizing” mezzo-soprano (IDS).
Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dr. Smokovich began her piano studies at age five and voice lessons at age 15. She completed her Bachelors of Music and Masters of Music at the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and went on to receive her Doctorate at the University of Michigan.
Performance highlights include Margaret Johnson in The Light in the Piazza (collegiate premiere), Annina in Der Rosenkavalier, Princess Clarissa in Prokofiev: The Love for Three Oranges, and Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof. She also directed and music directed Little Women.
Concert credits include the Verdi Opera Theater of Detroit, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and Indiana University’s Opera and Opera Workshop. Dr. Smokovich has worked with renowned conductors, directors, and coaches such as Mary Mitchell Campbell, David Effron, Dan Riddle, Michael Ehrmann, Carol Vaness, Virginia Zeani, Sylvia McNair, Dr. Wendy LeBorgne, Andreas Poulimenos and Freda Herseth.
Along with a deep love of performing, Dr. S has a great desire to teach, to share her love of music with others, and to nurture and support other singers. She believes that it is important to give young singers the proper tools to proceed into the music world with a healthy, supported, and sustainable sound, as well as a comprehensive knowledge of the music in general.
Dr. Smokovich was voice faculty for the University of Michigan’s Musical Theatre program for 5 years and, most recently, she was the Musical Theatre Voice professor at the University of Arizona.
